Hands On Exotics

Retirement & Long Term Care Homes

Healing Through Connection

Animal-assisted visits for retirement homes and long-term care facilities. We bring the animals; your activity team brings the expertise. Licensed and fully insured.

Every animal we bring into a care facility has the potential to reach someone that medicine alone cannot. That moment of connection — a smile, a touch, a memory unlocked — that is why we do this.

Long-Term Care

Residential Care Programs

We bring comfort and joy to long-term care residents through regular, structured animal visits. Our handlers work closely with activity directors to create meaningful, individualized encounters that residents look forward to every week.

  • Customized visit schedules aligned with your activity calendar
  • Dementia-friendly animals selected for calm temperament
  • Full coordination with activity directors and care staff

Retirement Homes

Retirement Community Programs

Active senior communities thrive on engaging programming. Our visits add a unique educational and social experience that residents talk about long after the animals leave — the kind of programming that distinguishes your community from the rest.

  • Group-format visits suitable for active seniors
  • Q&A and educational segments built into every session
  • Flexible scheduling to fit your activity calendar

Memory Care

Small-Group Memory Care Sessions

For residents in memory care, calm and predictability matter. We design quieter, smaller-group sessions where the animal stays in one spot, the handler narrates softly, and residents are met where they are — touch optional, never required.

  • Calm species and slow handler pacing tuned for cognitive support
  • Caregivers and family welcome to join each session
  • Infection-control protocols suited to high-acuity wings
A Visit in Action

Calm visits, attentive residents, real connection

Every program is designed around the activity calendar and the residents in the room. Our handlers stay quiet, the animals come to them, and the moment lasts long after we pack up the carriers.

Quiet, calm, gentle

A visit residents remember forever

Programs designed for seniors and memory care — slower pace, smaller groups, and animals chosen for gentle interactions.

Therapeutic Benefits

The Healing Power of Animal Interaction

Research-backed benefits observed across hundreds of animal-assisted visits in healthcare facilities.

Reduced Anxiety

Gentle animal interactions have been shown to lower cortisol levels and reduce feelings of anxiety and agitation in residents and patients.

Improved Mobility

Reaching, petting, and brushing animals encourages fine and gross motor movement in rehabilitation and long-term care settings.

Social Engagement

Animals become natural conversation starters, drawing even withdrawn residents into group interaction and shared experiences.

Cognitive Stimulation

Recalling animal names, species facts, and past pet experiences activates memory pathways and supports cognitive function.

Emotional Comfort

The unconditional presence of a therapy animal provides profound comfort during difficult transitions, grief, and recovery.

Sensory Experience

Varied textures, temperatures, and movements of different species provide rich, multi-sensory stimulation for all ages.

From Consultation to Ongoing Care

A thoughtful process designed for healthcare professionals.

  1. Consultation

Initial call with your activity director or care lead to understand resident needs and facility requirements.

  2. Program Design

We tailor animal selection, visit length, and frequency to match your residents and your activity calendar.

  3. Scheduled Visits

Recurring visits booked into your calendar. Insurance certificates and screening docs sent in advance.

  4. Day-of Visit

Our handlers arrive credentialed and ready. Hand-sanitization, animal health screening, and infection control protocols followed end-to-end.

Healthcare Compliance & Safety

MNR Licensed

We hold an active Custodian Licence issued by Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. Every animal in our care is registered, legally documented, and housed under conditions that meet or exceed provincial standards. Facilities receive copies of all relevant licences and documentation upon request.

Infection Control Protocols

We follow standard cleanup and hand-sanitizing protocols at every visit. Every visit includes pre-visit animal health screening, mandatory handler hand sanitization, and disposable barriers for surfaces where animals make contact. We are happy to walk your infection control team through our procedures during the booking conversation.

Comprehensive Liability Insurance

We carry comprehensive commercial general liability insurance specifically covering animal-assisted therapy activities in healthcare settings. Certificates of insurance naming your facility as an additional insured are provided before the first visit and kept current throughout your program. No coverage gaps, no surprises.

Handler Background Checks

Every handler who enters a healthcare facility has undergone a police criminal record check and vulnerable sector screening — the same standard required of healthcare staff working with at-risk populations. Background checks are renewed regularly and records are available for facility review upon request.
